The Verge 2018 tech report cards

If one word described the focus around the tech industry this year, it’s privacy. From user data mishandling to the private lives of major tech executives having impact on company cultures, this year we’ve become more aware than ever of when to take control of your own privacy – and when it’s time to speak out.

Beyond that, 2018 has also been a quieter year for innovation than the last – from gadgets to gaming to smartphones, most products we saw this year have been building on the grounds 2017 broke without many major new hardware releases. So how did some of the biggest tech companies and industries fare this year on The Verge’s annual report cards? In this last week of 2018, we’ll take a look at the past 12 months in technology, and what we can hope to look forward to in 2019.

Firefox is testing features that let you customize colors and view two tabs in one

Mozilla Firefox is testing out two new experimental extensions that let users further customize their browser and view tabs together more easily. The first one is called Firefox Color and it lets you change the colors of the background, text, icons, and the toolbar. Whatever you change can be saved and you can also choose to share your color schemes with others. Firefox also has a selection of pre-made color themes that you can choose from if you don’t want to customize every single color yourself. Uber and Lyft confirm that they want to expand to offer electric scooters

Uber wants a permit to operate e-scooters in San Francisco, the company confirmed to The Verge . Scooters would be added to the Uber fleet alongside ride-sharing cars and bikes supplied by the bike-sharing startup Jump, which Uber acquired in April. Lyft has also said that it’s applied for permits for electric scooters in San Francisco, but the company currently doesn’t have a scooter or bike operation. It’s reportedly in talks to buy bike-sharing company Motivate. The city announced new regulations for scooters and a permit process at the end of May. Under those rules, startups had to remove their scooters from the streets by June 4th and apply for permits by June 7th. Those that win permits will be allowed into a 12-month pilot...
